Myopia Management
Leading the Way in Myopia Care-Certified Expertise, Global Impact.
We are proud to be the first practice in Cyprus to introduce Myopia Management since 2013. We have acquired the International Academy Certification in Myopia Management (IACMM), an advanced accreditation offered by the International Academy of Orthokeratology & Myopia Control (IAOMC) to individuals who have completed a comprehensive training program in myopia management and orthokeratology. By completing the IACMM program, individuals can demonstrate the possession of the highest level of knowledge, ethics and patient care in the field of myopia management and orthokeratology.
Myopia is a global public health concern, with its prevalence rising sharply worldwide. A recent study has estimated 30% of the world population to be currently myopic and by 2050, almost 50% will be myopic. That means 5 billion people will have myopia and nearly 1 billion at risk of high myopia, which significantly increases the risk of sight threatening conditions like retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and cataracts.
HIGH PREVALENCE IN ASIA
Myopia and Global Trends
Asian countries such as China, Singapore, South Korea tend to have extremely high myopia prevalence reaching to about 80-90%.
• 5 billion myopes by 2050
• 1 billion with high myopia by 2050
• Myopia to become a leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide
Kids are Advised to:
• spend more than 2 hours in outdoor activities
• spend less than 2 hours on near work tasks after school
• do regular breaks when reading or using tablet
• increase their reading distance
Risks for Developing Myopia
• Kids with 1x parent myopic: 3x risk
• Kids with 2x parents myopic: 7x risk
• Asians tend to have higher prevalence of myopia but also tend to progress faster
• Early onset myopia, before the age of 10, tends to progress more rapidly
MANAGING MYOPIA, SHAPING BRIGHTER FUTURES
Management
1. Orthokeratology
Revolutionary way of vision correction. Also known as orthokeratology, night lenses, are specially designed rigid gas permeable lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea, the clear surface of the eye. They provide clear comfortable vision during the day, free from glasses and contact lenses.
2. Soft Contact Lenses
Most of these novel designs have been developed specifically to slow the myopia in children but some are used also to correct presbyopia. They are worn during the day like normal soft lenses.
3. Spectacle lenses with Myopia Control Designs
Novel lens designs that use concentric rings of treatment zones in the lens to create an extra defocus signal for the eye. These out of focus areas tell the eye to slow down growth. These spectacles are given for constant wear.
4. Low dose Atropine
Low dose Atropine 0.01% – 0.05% has been proven to be effective in reducing myopia progression in children with minimal side effects. Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other modalities. In Cyprus, low dose atropine is prescribed by the ophthalmologists only.
